The Audi A8 is an extremely expansive car with many variations and options. The years in production range from 1994 to the present, and there have been three generations of design. The interesting thing about Audi is that it competes with BMW and Mercedes across and array of classes and styles; the Audi A8 seems to be aimed to compete against Mercedes’s more luxurious classes, and it does a fine job at that.
There are so many variations of this car that its hard to sum up what its about, but the third and current generation seems to be more about tech and luxury with an extremely impressive engine. The third gen started in 2009, and now has progressed into such models as the A8 hybrid, which delivers exactly what it promises. Or even more impressive and prestigious is the Audi A8 W12, which has a ridiculously low production count at only 50 units; with leather by Poltrona Frau, it became a favorite at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor show. The S8 4.0 TFSI quattro is a very interesting variant in that it shares the same engine as the Bentley GT, this car was also shown at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2001 and went on sale in 2012, and in 2013 in Taiwan. In 2014 the third generation Audi A8 got a facelift with a Multi Media Interface, which has broadband internet capabilities. It now has Cornering lights, a night vision assistant, head-up display, electromechanical power steering, active lane assist, park assist, side assist, active noise cancellation, additional noise damping, and many other changes.
The car is truly for someone who wants something relatively low-key yet at the sometime wanting power from the engine, and luxury with immense tech.
The Prodrive P2 is a extremely interesting prototype created by Prodrive, Banbury, Warwick. The car is based on the Subaru R1 kei and a very well known engine – the Subaru Impreza WRX STI – coupled with many systems which Prodrive designed for their World Championship racing programmers, which have been proven to be extremely impressive. The design of the car was done by Peter Stevens who is famous for designing the McLaren F1 car. The car features a rally like anti lag system which prevents turbo lag as well as an active center and active rear differential with maximum grip performance. The rear differential uses an advanced computer system to shift torque wherever it is needed, making the maneuvering absolutely amazing. The system uses spin-slip sensor readings, which is very common in rally cars, but almost never seen on road cars. One car has been fully completed and was featured on Top-Gear, where one of the hosts tested this deferential system by driving the car around a circle; the car kept closing the circle at extremely high speeds for such a maneuver, resulting in the host, Jeremy Clarkson, having to stop the car, open the door and vomiting all over the road. The car obtained a 0-60 speed in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 174 with only 345 bhp. Which is extremely impressive for a car designed from rally tech. On the Top-Gear track, the car received a time o 1:24:3, beating out the Audi R8, the BMW M5, The Aston Marin Vanquish, and the TVR Sagaris. Prodrive has no plans to put this car into production. Regardless, the Prodrive P2 is one of the most impressive cars produced in the last 20 years, and we’ve started to see the tech ideas being put into other car systems by more known automakers.
The Ferrari F430 is the successor to the Ferrari 360, and the predecessor to the 458, which makes it an extremely interested bridge car. You can definitely see the F430 influence in the 458 design. It debuted at the 2004 Paris Motor Show and its production lasted until the 28th of July 2009. This car could have been probably produced for another 3-4 years by Ferrari, but the 458 design was so stellar that they was almost no point in not discontinuing the production of the F430 and dropping the 458 into production.
The F430 had and excellent design, they started with the Ferrari 360 design and made the car more aerodynamic and with much more down force. Although somehow the drag coefficient remained the same. Enzo tail lights were used. The car totes a 4.3L v8 Ferrari-Maserati F136 family engine. This engine architecture is the replacement for the Dino project which spanned decades, and the F430 is the first Ferrari to employ and engine from the new project. The brakes are an interesting collaboration between Brembo, Basch, and Ferrari, resulting in something excellent.
There were six non-racing variants of the car. Of course there’s the F430 spider. Then there is the F430 challenge which is more of a track version. Then there’s the 430 Scuderia with is and interesting model in which its the closest design to what was going to become – the 458. And of course there’s a spider variant called the Suderia Spider 16M. The two lesser known variants of the car are the F430 Spider Bio Fuel, and the SP1 which there is only one of.
There were many racing variants of this car, each one with very impressive stats.
This car is an extremely important part of Ferrari’s history. By know everyone should know the 458 and how much of an impressive machine it is, but the F430 made the 458 very possible by having new ideas in both engine and styling being tried out on it. The result was excellent, and thanks to this car much more became possible, unlike some models where things were discarded the car was lost in history to its other overshadowing brothers, this car should be seen with the same respect the 458 is; only because it is what made the 458 possible.
The Pagani Zonda is an Italian manufactured car that has so many versions it really is hard to keep track of them all. The car is heavily F1 inspired, and is really only meant for driving on a track, for there’s not much in the was of comfort and luxury designed into it. The car debuted in 199 at the Geneva Motor Show, where the first version, the Zonda c12 was showcased. It was powered by a 6.0L Mercedes-Benz V12 engine which was matted to a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox. Only five of this first model was made.
Next in line was the Pagani Zonda s, which housed a AMG-tuned version of the same engine, and had other minor changes.
The next bunch of has minor changes to the engine and mechanics, and more changes to styling. It actually got quite ridiculous – how many different versions of the same car were produced just mainly based on styling.
There where however two versions that stuck out. The Zonda R, and the Zonda Revolucion.
The Pagani Zonda R is by no means a road car, it is in fact a track care in the same vein as the Ferrari Fxx is a track car. It has an 6.0 liter V12 Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR, which out-puts 740 hp at 8500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed longitudinally-mounted manual sequential synchronized gearbox. The interior of the car is bare minimal and meant to both save weight and be practical.
No one could really ever figure out want this car was suppose to be because of all of its variations. Despite all of this the car is rather impressive.
The BMW M6 has a history little known in America, yet the car is one of the most recognizable ones put out by BMW. The M6 first came about in 1983 when BMW modified the M88/3 engine which is a modified version of what’s in the M1 and dropped it into a E24 Chassis creating what is known as the M6325CSI, or rather, the M6. The car was critically acclaimed, and often referred to as the “shark nose.” The production ended in 1989.
In 2005 the car was reserected with all knew tech but it still kept its very much sharp nose in its design. It was also acclaimed to be an all around stellar car, with the only issue that most people having bing the Idrive system which seemed to crash, or be to ridiculously complicated. But all in all the car was given great ratings and said to be a terrific drive. A total of 9,087 coupes and 5,056 convertibles were sold by 2010 when production of this generation stopped.
Two years after closing production they surprised the car world with a new generation. In March 2012 the M6 deputed at the Geneva Motor Show. The model is based on the BMW F12/F13 and shares its 7-speed M-DCT gearbox, and the BMW s63 V8 engine and other technology with the BMW M5 (F10).
In a way the BMW M6 has been a model car for BMW technology and even though its officially not some could call this their flagship car. We can’t wait to see what else they have in store for use.
The Rolls-Royce Phantom is the most iconic and popular Rolls around, of which the history spans decades of luxurious innovation and design. Starting from 1925 on, each model has brought a fascinating change that has set the bar for high-class auto-design. The first generation was put to production to replace the Silver Ghost. The car would go on to absolutely set the tone for generations to come.
Nowadays there are a few Phantom models in production: the standard Rolls-Royce Phantom, The Phantom Drophead Coupe, and the Phantom Coupe.
The standard model has gone through many changes over the years and since its introduction into the auto markets in 2003. It was released and designed during Rolls-Royce’s BMW ownership. The car impressed the hosts of Top-Gear, so much so that they gave it “car of the year” in 2003.
In 2007 The Phanotom Drophead Coupe was released and was strongly based on the 2003 standard model. This was off course a two door smaller convertible version of the standard design. The interior is an interesting generational mix of gentlemen’s clubs, ranging from Art Deco to minimalist. It is currently the expensive Phantom model, priced at $533,000.00 . The first one sold was auctioned at Naples, Florida for charity.
At the Geneva Motor show, in 2008, the Rolls-Royce Phontom Coupe debuted, and of course it was heavily based off the Standard Phantom 100EX model. The unobvious alterations of this coupe are extremely interesting. For one, there are fiber optics in the headliner to simulate the stars of a night sky. There is a segment-leading system for better fuel economy. The car has received many positive reviews, among them are the hosts of Top-Gear who gave the car a 9/10 review, with a 10/10 for quality. The only complaint they had was that it costs to much.
The Phontom legacy is certainly an enjoyable one of sturdiness and consistency in quality and innovation of design.
The Koenigsegg Regera is a car designed by Christian von Koenigsegg, and is revolutionary in its design. The car was unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The name Regera means to reign in Swedish. Only 80 unites are rumored to be built for a price tag of 1.9 million. The car is seen as more practical and a luxurious alternative to Koenigsegg’s line up. Koenigseggs claims that the Regera is the most powerful and fastest accelerating production car ever built.
The specifications for the Koenigsegg Regera are very interesting and contains technologies and ideas that are completly new. The Transmission, or lack there of, was invented by Christian von Koenigsegg and is a Direct Drive System. The Koenigsegg Regera system eliminates the need for a transmission and allows for a pure use of the electronic engine. The system has a on gear direct drive single speed setup, called direct drive, which means that the power of the engine is put directly to the wheels, making its acceleration extremely impressive at 2.8 seconds from 0-60 mph, and 0-100 in 12.3.
Unlike any other Koenigsegg’s build , the luxury of this car has increased. But it is Koenigsegg and thus the concept of “luxury” is Swedish, that means that its a minimal upgrade for later Koenigsegg’s cars. The noise in the cabin has been repressed, there are cameras on all sides with recording capabilities, Apple carplay, a new sound system, ambient lighting, and 3G and Wi-fi connectivity.
The Porsche 918 Spyder is a hybrid mid engined sports car that is a perfect example of modern German engineering at its finest. The motor is a naturally aspirated 4.6 v8, which pumps out 608 hp, and has two electric motors which produce and additional 279 hp, making it a combined 887 hp. The car has a maz speed of 210 mph and handles around the track like a dream. The company built the tech for the hybrid engine in the Panamera S E-Hybrid, and was shown at the Geneva Motor show in 2010 as a concept car. The production version came three years later and was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2013.
The only variant made was the RSR, which was shown at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Instead of having the hybrid motor tech which the 918 Spyder has, the RSR is provided extra hp by a flywheel accumulator KERS system. The overall hp is smaller at 767 total. This variation was not majorly produced.
The Nürburgring lap time for this car pretty much says everything that could possibly be said about the Porsche 918 Spyder. On September 4, 2013, a 918 Spyder set a track time of 6:57 on the 12.8 mi course, which reduced the previous course record by 14 seconds while making it the first street legally produced car to break the 7 min barrier. The car that held the record before hand was the Radical SR8, which was not street legal. The Porsche 918 Spyder also holds the production car lap record at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca at 1:29.89.
This car is one of the all around impressive modern vehicles, for it has it all. Tech, an amazing engine and handling that’s just seemingly unrivaled.
The Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 is a magnificent example of modern engineering and automobile ability. The midengined car was first presented at the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show where it was first displayed as just a mere concept car. The first working prototype would not hit the road until 2003, official production was not until September of 2005. The car was designed by Volkswagen Group and is manufactured in Molshim, Freance by bugatti Automobiles S.A.S.. It officially holds the Guinness World Record for fastest street leagl car at a top speed of 286.497mph. The name Veyton comes from Pierre Veyron an hounered Bugatti Engineer, test driver, and company race car driver who won the 1939 24 hour of Lemans. There have been four main variants, with many sub-variants of the car each for a range of years. The first being the 2005-2011 Bugatti Veyron 16.4. The second being the Grand sport produced from 2009-2015. The Third was the Grandsport super sport, and the last one was the Grand Sport Vitesse.
The specifications and engineering on all variations are so spectacular that its no wonder the average top speed is 253-267 mph depending on the variant. One must activate a top speed mode before launch, to make sure that the driver is ready to attempt such speeds.
The Bugatti Veyron was driven by all three members of Topgear in which all gave it immense praise. Jeremy Clarkson said it was our generations concord moment, and all voted it as the car of the decade.
The Buggati Veyron is a tremendousfeat of expertise and German engineering, and will forever be held as such.
The Porsche Carrera GT is one of the most notorious cars of all time. Its even listed on the list for the top Eight supercars of all time. It was manufactured by Porsche from 2004-2007 in Leipzing Germany.
The history on how the car came to be, and the decision to create the project to design the care is fairly interesting. The idea of the Carrera GT can be traced back to the two racing cars the 911 GT1 and LMP1-98. Because of a ruling by FIA ACO both cars ended their use. So Porsche had to come up with something new for a Le Mans car; the plan was to have a flat -6, but later they changed it to a V10. After two days of testing the project was cancelled because they needed the engineering expertise to build the Cayenne. The V10 engine did not go to waste; it was used in a concept car that was shown in 2000 at the Paris Motor Show. The car got so much attention that Porsche decided to make a street legal version of the prototype and with a few modes the Carrera GT was born. Originally there were supposed to only be 1,500 GTs produced, but in 2005 they said that they would not continue production of the GT because of new airbag regulations in the United States.
Thus making 1,270 in total produced. This car is truly a collector’s car. The fact that such a car could happen almost by accident is astounding, and speaks volumes about the car.
